Building the Kingdom of God Through Following Jesus Christ

Missions and Service

First United Methodist Church is always striving to serve the people of the community and the world with Christ's outreaching love.  Below is a list of just some of the ways we use our gifts to do the good works of God's love.  If you have questions, if you want to get involved, or if you have a new idea, call the church office today at 318-377-1483.

Ramp Ministry
This ministry serves people in the Minden area by building wheelchair ramps.  A team of volunteers design and built each ramp according to standards of the highest quality in order to assist people who are physically unable to enter and exit their homes and who are financially unable to pay for the construction.  With some help from community donations of money and materials, the ministry seeks to serve those in the most need in our community.

Summer Mission Trip for Adults
Each summer, a team of volunteers embark on a mission trip to some destination in an effort to serve the poor.  We have sent teams to Douglas, Alaska; Frakes, Kentucky; Buras, Louisiana; and the Choctaw Reservation in Mississippi.

Summer Mission Trip for Youth
Our young people learn a lot about themselves and others as they serve Christ through various mission projects.  Each summer, they travel away from home to do the good works of God's love.

Knitting for the Homeless
A group of dedicated knitters regurlarly gather to knit items for homeless in the Shreveport area.

Prayer Blankets
Special blankets are made and prayed over as a gift to any person in need.  People going through crises and illnesses have received these visible reminders of God's healing grace.

Church Food Pantry
We strive to feed the hungry by providing basic grocery items to help people through difficult times.  Your help in keeping the food pantry stocked is always needed.  Donations of food items can be delivered to the church office.

U.C.A.P. Support
The United Christian Assistance Program is an area ministry that seeks to help the needy in the Minden area.  FUMC supports this community ministry by donations of canned food and funding.  Current UCAP Needs - canned mixed vegetables, English peas, canned lunch meat, tomato sauce, instant mashed potatoes, oatmeal, grits, bath towels, and wash cloths.  Donations may be made at 204 Miller Street between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  For more information, please call 377-6804.

Neighborhood Christmas Tree
During each Advent season, church members gather gift items for the elderly and homebound of the community.  Recipients have responded with hugs, and several community agencies have responded with very grateful thanks and told of some wonderful stories of how the boxes and bags have been received.

United Methodist Children's Home Support
The United Methodist Children's Home serves young people throughout the state of Louisiana.  FUMC supports this ministry in many ways, particularly through the sale of salsa (a fundraiser for the kids) and by providing gift cards at Christmas.
